2022 is the year for initial steps towards the moon. Two new rockets central to NASA’s lunar plans will launch to space for the first time, each with more power than the Saturn 5 rocket from the Apollo program. Other countries are expected to join the march to the moon as well.
South Korea’s first moon Mission
The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, a box-shaped satellite, will be South Korea’s first foray to the moon
NASA's Moon Rocket
NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) might make its first trip to space — without any humans — as early as March, after years of development delays. The mission, dubbed Artemis 1, will be the first in a series of missions by SLS, NASA's flagship rocket system for sending moonbound astronauts off Earth, as part of NASA's Artemis programme.
The next test for SpaceX will be a spaceship
SpaceX's Starship, which will be used as a human lunar lander in 2025, is a key component of NASA's attempts to return humans to the moon. It will be the first time an astronaut has visited the moon's surface since 1972.
Starship is a fully reusable rocket system that will be critical to SpaceX's revenue-generating satellite launch business. It is also at the heart of Elon Musk's eventual ambition of ferrying humans to Mars.
Moon robots backed by NASA
Three robotic moon landers are expected to reach the lunar surface this year as part of a NASA initiative. The Nova-C lander, a six-legged cylindrical robot, is set to fly early this year aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, bringing a dozen payloads to the lunar surface. The Peregrine lander is a four-legged, boxy lander with an onboard propulsion system that will land on a basaltic plain in the moon's northeastern quadrant's bright side.
Putting a complicated lunar orbit to the test Rocket Lab
It specializes in small-scale launches, is preparing to launch CAPSTONE, a microwave-sized satellite for NASA, from its launch site in New Zealand in March. The satellite will investigate a lunar orbit. Gateway, a future space station constructed by NASA and other space organizations, will be stationed there sometime in the next decade.
More global visitors Lunar robots from three other countries — Russia, India and Japan — will also try to make their way to the moon this year. India plans to send the Chandrayaan-3 lander and rover to the moon in the third quarter of this year, attempting its third moon mission after the lander-rover bundle from India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission crashed in 2019.
