Pandora's Box And The Power of Hope

The tale of Pandora's box opens with the tale of Zeus, Epimetheus, and Prometheus. Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus were Titans, but as Prometheus was born with the unique power of prophecy and realized that Zeus would overcome the Titans.Pandora's Box is a tale of how evil in the world came to exist; suffering came out of a box in this Greek myth. However, the box held one positive thing—hope. As the Brief Retelling says, "So now, whens, they pledged their allegiance to Zeus and the Olympians. For their obedience, Zeus rewarded Prometheus and Epimetheus and gave them the task of making the first beings to live on Earth. The animals were created by Epimetheus and gave each one a unique ability and type of protection.

Prometheus took his time molding man, because Epimetheus had already given them all away, and was left without any means of protection.

Prometheus knew that some sort of protection was required by man and asked Zeus if he could allow man to have fire. Zeus declined. Fire was for the gods only. Prometheus disregarded Zeus and gave fire to man anyway. Prometheus was disciplined for this. With chains, Zeus bound him to a rock far out in the Caucasus Mountains, where no one can find him. Zeus sent an eagle every day to feast on the liver of Prometheus, which grew back every day so that Prometheus would have to suffer this torment every day before Prometheus was discovered by Heracles and killed the eagle and let go of Prometheus.

As a wedding present, Zeus gave Pandora a box (in ancient Greece this was called a jar) but warned her never to open it.Zeus brought her to Earth to be Epimetheus’ wife. Even though Epimetheus’ brother, Prometheus, had warned him of Zeus’ trickery and told him not to accept gifts from the gods, Epimetheus was too taken with her beauty and wanted to marry her anyway.

She afterward opened the jar, from which the evils flew out over the earth. Hope alone remained inside, the lid having been shut down before she could escape. In a later story the jar contained not evils but blessings, which would have been preserved for the human race had they not been lost through the opening of the jar out of curiosity. Pandora’s jar became a box in the 16th century, when the Renaissance humanist Erasmus either mistranslated the Greek or confused the vessel with the box in the story of Cupid and Psyche. The Tale of the Pandora's Box Reminds All of our brethren That Although humans have difficulty and sorrow, we have confidence that we will know that tomorrow will be better.
