Biden, a law school graduate, returned to Delaware to serve as a lawyer, but was elected to the U.S. At the age of 29, the Senate in 1972, becoming the fifth youngest senator in history. His wife and newborn daughter were killed in a car crash about a month later, and his two sons were seriously wounded. While Biden considered suspending his political career, he was convinced to join the Senate in 1973, and he went on to win re-election six times, becoming Delaware’s longest-serving senator. Biden sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 but quickly withdrew for some unexplained reasons. His 2008 presidential campaign never gained traction, and after placing fifth in the Iowa Democratic Elections that year, he decided to drop the idea of running for president.

But Biden soon emerged as a front-runner to be Obama's vice-presidential running mate after retiring from the race. Obama officially declared his selection of Biden as the vice presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, and Obama and Biden won the Democratic Party's nomination. John McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, were defeated by the Obama-Biden ticket and Biden comfortably secured reelection to his U.S. Seat in the Senate. He soon resigned from the Senate post and took the oath of office as vice president on January 20, 2009. As vice president, Biden played an active role in the administration, serving as an influential adviser to Obama and a vocal supporter of his initiatives. In addition, he was tasked with notable assignments. He helped avert several budget crises and played a key role in shaping U.S. policy in Iraq. Several months later, Biden—who enjoyed high political ratings, partly due to a personality that resonated with the public, announced that he would not enter the 2016 presidential election, noting that the family was still grieving the loss of his eldest son who was lost to Brain Cancer. Instead, he campaigned for Hillary Clinton, who ultimately lost the election to Donald Trump. Biden remained involved in politics and was a vocal critic of then President Donald Trump. Biden announced his candidacy for President 2020 in April 2019, joining a crowded Democratic field.

Biden became a front runner immediately, and he followed an agenda that was considered moderate, especially compared to candidates such as Bernie Sanders. However, a weak result in the first Debate of the party in June 2019 raised concerns about Biden, and his support dipped. Sanders looked poised to become the party's candidate after the first three nominating contests in early 2020. Nevertheless, questions about the electability of Sanders in the general election divided voters, but Biden bounced back and secured a resounding win in late February in South Carolina. Numerous candidates subsequently fell out, and it was now a two-man race between Biden and Sanders by early March. As Biden continued registering Wins, he soon took a commanding lead in delegates. After the coronavirus pandemic stalled the race, Sanders dropped out in April, and Biden became the presumptive Democratic nominee.
